Five Criteria To Determine The Worthiness Of Mentors To Follow

Most people, like me find their first mentor by reading books and that is a great place for a start. Especially speaker like Zig Zigler.

I have to admit that my early development process was hit and miss, I was learning according to trial and error. I came to realize that to develop myself for success, I needed a mentor. And without the benefit of a mentor, could only take me only so far. I’m still learning from people, some look better from a distance, but turnout to be disappointments.

You have to be selective when it comes to choosing a mentor and models.

I share here with you qualities of a good a mentor in hope that it will help you make good choices for your development.


1. A Good Mentor Is Worthy Example
You become like people you admire and the models you follow. For this reason, you should take great care when determine which people you want to mentor you. They must only display professional and possess skill sets from which you can learn, they must also demonstrating character worthy of emulating. As you look for role models and mentors, scrutinize carefully there public performance. Your value will be influence by theirs. You should not be too casual with who you choose to follow.


 2.    A Good Mentor Is Available
You not only watch what they say, but what they do. For you to observe close and see what they do, you must be able to have some contact, which requires access and availability so that you have time with the mentor to ask question and learn from their answers. The greatest piece of advice is their availability when you need them because when you are just starting out you will have lots of question to ask.

3.    A Good Mentor Has Proven Experience
The further you go in pursuit of your growth, the more new ground you will have to break. How do you figure how to proceed? Benefit from others experience.

As A Chinese proverbs says, to know the read ahead, ask those coming back

I don’t know of any successful person who hasn’t learned from experienced people. Sometimes they follow their footsteps. Other time they use their advice to help them break new ground. All leaders are influenced by who they admire.


 4.    A Good Mentor Possess Wisdom.
If you are just starting out, and don’t know what is your (USP) unique selling proposition. Mentors with wisdom can help you understand where to tap. Their understanding, experience and knowledge help solve problems that would have had a hard time handling on your own. Often, wise people use few words to help us learn and develop. They can help you open your eyes to world you might otherwise see without their help. They make you see opportunities you would otherwise miss, they make you wiser.


 5.    A Good Mentor Provides Friendship and Support
Nobody wants to be guided by a person who isn’t interested in them? Selfish mentors will only assist you only insofar as it advances their own agenda. Good mentor provides friendship and support, unselfishly working to help you reach your potential. If A person offers you friendship, then the relationship will always fall short of your expectation. Knowledge without support is sterile. Advice without friendship feels cold. Condor without care is hash. However, when you are being helped by someone who cares for you it is emotionally satisfying. Growth comes from both head and the heart. Only supportive mentors are willing to share that with you.A good mentor cares.

Good Mentors Share Five Common Characteristics;

• Care for people they coach
• Observe their attitude, behavior and performance
• Align them with their strengths for peak performance
• Communicate and give feedback about performance
• Help them to improve their performance

In Greece, a mentor is a wise and trusted adviser.


No matter what word you use to describe them, they are meant to make a positive difference to your life. Their goal as a coach should be to help you..
